In a frame of the 'Hopes and Memories project'  we organised workshops and prepared several different outputs based on moving images and documentary footages from previous Durban residency. During these 20 days artist and art students were using these symbols, characters and materials to transpose them into complex video, VJ and real-time performances.

Visual sub-project in Visegrad countries 2013

Basis for the project was residency of participating artists in South Africa in March 2013. After experiencing stratification of post-apartheid society, they decided to compare it to Central European reality. In South Africa, separation of races is still very visible, society if full of impeaching and paranoid feelings, full of wryness and effort for change at the same time. The project tries to find common issues in Visegrad countries and develop artistic piece - videoart footage - as commentary to our situation.
Artists involved in project are Lukáš Matejka and Michaela Bottková (videoartists, TRAKT),

Tomáš Žižka (set designer and site specific artist, mamapapa), Agnieszka Cwielag (sociologist, Nowinart), Gyula Berger (choreographer, Zero Ballet), Reka Szucs (dance film director, ZB), 4 dancers (ZB).
They meet (first virtually in August, then physically in Prague), above videos and pictures taken in South Africa, analyze them and select strongest moments, connecting to Visegrad reality. After selection, they will prepare script for video, to be filmed in Budapest during creative residency in October. Final output, videoart project made of South African videos and photos and new materialsmade by artists, will be commentary to xenophobia, racial tensions, minority problems and connectedtopics, crossing over dance, video, site specific approach and sociological approach. For presenting the results, we will use method of beamvertising: In each city we carefully selectlocations for projection, which are important or symbolic for locals and will us help to emphasizemessage of the project. Then, from car moving on selected route, we will project the videoart piece inthose locations and audience will move with the projection.

Project takes common topic that appears in each country, not only Visegrad. Artists of different fields and different countries meet to put together specific national points of majority/minority relations in Visegrad and create common output - video project. This will give artistic overview of situation, trying to find connections between countries and their cultures. Idea of presenting the project in all countries will help the public - audience - to understand what is same and what is different in other countries of Visegrad, according to majority / minorities problems. Using materials from South Africa brings another point of view, from outside of our region, bounding them together.

- General public in 4 cities, people who will take part in the events organized within the project (both by accident or planned). Local inhabitants know their city well and for places, chosen for projection, they have own stories. By this project, they will experience these places with new story, look at their city differently and think about their own relation to minority / majority.
- Artistic professionals and communities in 4 Visegrad countries. Benefit for them is to experience social engagement of inter-medial concept, to see crossover between documentary and art videos as well as between dance and new media. As most inspiring we consider the ambition to present the output in certain locations, that will contribute to artistic message of the piece.

The main output of project are 4 public events in streets of 4 cities (Bratislava, Budapest, Prague, Wroclaw), where the final video project will be presented. The event will be situated in certain public places, carefully chosen to fulfill the artistic concept. With mobile videoprojection, so called beamvertising, when projector is placed in a car that is moving, the audience will move too, or watch just a small part of the film.
Another output is the videoproject itself, that can be used also as a solo videoart piece.
Inspiring and surprising might be the video material, shot during public events - documentation of the audience, that comes to well known places to experience brand new situation. We want to use this material for further developing of the project.

The project will continue after period proposed here in three different lines.

1, Hopes and memories is part of larger cooperation between project partners and more organizations from France and South Africa. Experience and outcomes from this project will be used in 2014, while going on the cooperation activities.
2, Final event of the project, beamvertise presentation, is easy to be moved and presented in different places. If the response is good, we will organize more events in partner countires, covered from national sources.
3, Recording of the events, especially reactions of audience on provocative pictures, will generate new meta-material which can be used by authors for reflecting, developing of perception or further creation.
